Tip 1: Find a fun physical hobby! In this world of video games and computers, going outside and playing hide and seek just isn’t that interesting anymore. There are plenty of sports and other activities out there that your child might have a potential interest in. Examples would be skateboarding, snowboarding, rollerskating, volleyball, ice-hockey, land-hockey, soccer, football or basketball.
Tip 2: Set an example! If you want your child to get healthy, you should get healthy as well. You are his/her role-model, so if you have an unhealthy lifestyle, it will be a lot harder for him/her to get healthy.
Tip 3: Set goals and give your child rewards for good work! Goals could be “no candy for a week” or “an hour of playing outside every day”. Anything you can think of really. Plan this out with your child, because if you force him/her chances are he/she won’t be very motivated.
Tip 4: Carefully check the description of food products before you buy. The truth is “less fat” sometimes means “a lot of fat but not quite as much”. It’s important to buy food that have little or no fat, like vegetables, zero fat milk and fruits. Also, you should look for whole grain products, like whole grain rice or whole grain pasta. This is because of the large amount of fiber whole grain products contain, which has multiple health benefits. Some more healthy snacks are low fat popcorn, fresh fruits or nuts.
Tip 5: Keep a record of what your child eats. This will give you an overview of the progress he/she is making and will help his/her motivation.
